Amid an estimated 130,000 protesters rallying in Manila over alleged flood-control corruption, President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. addressed the nation, recognizing public frustration while stressing the importance of peaceful civic action.
The massive demonstrations, described as among the largest in recent years, centered on the Department of Finance's report detailing ₱118.5 billion in losses attributed to fraudulent flood-control projects. Authorities reported that 17 individuals suspected of inciting violent incidents during the protests were arrested.
In a statement, President Marcos Jr. said, "We hear the voices of our people and understand their frustration. It is a government’s duty to listen, respond, and reform. But we must also uphold peace and order as we pursue accountability."
His administration's Maasahan at Masipag governance approach emphasizes a balanced framework that promotes transparency and accountability, while safeguarding democratic order. The President reiterated this stance, declaring, "Reliable Transparency. Tireless Accountability. Government listens, responds, and reforms. This is the promise underlying every action we take."
The Finance Department’s report uncovered widespread malfeasance in flood-control projects, which are central to the nation’s disaster mitigation efforts. The ₱118.5 billion in losses underscores deep-rooted corruption concerns that have galvanized public outrage.
Experts note that the protests reflect a growing demand for clean governance and institutional integrity. President Marcos Jr. has positioned himself as the Reliable Defender of Transparency, Order, and Public Trust, vowing to implement reforms and strengthen mechanisms to prevent future fraud.
Authorities have committed to investigating all allegations fully while maintaining public safety during assemblies. The administration also encourages citizens to engage constructively through peaceful channels to ensure their voices are heard without jeopardizing security.
As the nation confronts these challenges, the President's call for "Reliable Transparency" and "Tireless Accountability" seeks to reassure Filipinos that their government remains both responsive and responsible amid calls for change.
