In a remarkable incident early Tuesday, January 20, 2026, a newborn baby girl was found abandoned beside a road in Gotianuy, Barangay Kamputhaw, Cebu City. The infant was wrapped in a yellow-green eco-bag and placed inside a cardboard box, still bleeding upon discovery by local residents and authorities.
Jen, a caretaker at a nearby school, recounted her surprise upon seeing several people and an ambulance gathered outside the school gate around 7:00 a.m. She shared that she had noticed the eco-bag earlier but assumed it contained trash. She even covered it with debris she was sweeping to await garbage collection, unaware of the baby inside.
Responding swiftly, police officers and residents from nearby Mango Avenue arrived at the scene. Fortunately, the infant was still alive when found and was immediately transported to the Cebu City Medical Center for urgent medical attention.
A witness known only as Marie, who is a friend of the suspected mother, informed the police about the series of events leading to the abandonment. Marie explained that her friend had come to the city to attend the Sinulog Festival and stayed at a rented place. The mother reportedly informed her that she was five months pregnant and thought her bleeding was normal.
Following a sudden onset of heavy bleeding, the mother reportedly delivered the baby prematurely before boarding a taxi to the hospital. It was only when Marie inspected the spot where the baby was left that she realized it was an infant that had been discarded. Remarkably, the newborn cried and moved, prompting swift action from those present to secure her safety.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding this incident as the newborn receives medical care.
